Are songs just poems set to music? Maybe, but some songs are much more!

With poems our poets try to tell us things in a more artsy way. Poets wish you to pay attention. They us an intelligent style so you know their message is meant to be special.

Songs are meant to get emotional responses. Lots of music exists without any lyrics attached to them.

Music lyrics do not have to be written in spectacular language because the music score and the instruments playing the melody already brings a lot of attention to the sounds.

Singing is done to fit in with the sounds the band or orchestra is making.

Yes, many elements of songs and poetry are similar. But singers have learned that one does not have to sing as orderly and structured as a poet often has to write. This is because the instrumental can disguise imperfections like words that do not actually rhyme but almost rhyme.

Poets do not have music to shoulder some of the tasks of keeping their readers/audience excited thru their whole reading.

Singers can take a pause and let the drummer or trombone player, or flutist take center stage for a spell.

Cymbals can boom to emphasize a point. Poets need language manipulation to blast their points.

Lyricists are very crafty. Song writers know a big part of their responsibility is to make the singer's performance look great. So, besides appealing to the listeners' ears they have to be aware that there is often a stage production that is going on too while their song gets sung.
